About Jessica Stephens

I'm a kick-ass copy editor. I'm also unemployed. I just finished a master's at the Missouri School of Journalism. I used to be a secondary English teacher at a strict Christian school, but my teaching career ended when I defected from fundamental Christianity. I love learning about Abrahamic religions (Eastern religions are interesting, too, but above my head), overanalyzing standup and sketch comedy, and reading about social justice. I'm also eerily good at music theory for someone who's not all that great at playing any musical instruments. If you need someone to write a counterpoint or resolve a seventh, I'm your woman.

I have worked as a reporter and page designer at The Columbia Missourian, a graduate teaching assistant and assistant news editor on the Missourian's interactive copy editing desk, and a Dow Jones News Fund copy editing intern at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Before teaching, I went to a Bible college where I wasn't allowed to curse, wear pants or listen to rock music. It was a lot more fun than it sounds, especially considering that some of my favorite things in the world are cursing, wearing pants and listening to rock music. After leaving Bible college, I had to get a second bachelor's, as God credits don't transfer as easily as you'd think. So in addition to "creating a rock so big that He can't move it," you should add "being connected to an accredited college" to things God cannot do.
